This project was completed during our 3B term for our Studio course. We were assigned the site of 152 Shanley Street, Kitchener, and tasked with designing a residential building that included 120 units and 1000m² of commercial space. The intent of the project was to demonstrate how form, function, and performance can be the main drivers towards building design in site-specific applications. Emphasis was placed on designing a building that made use of passive strategies to lower the carbon footprint.
Our design made use of a solar chimney on the South facing façade of the building that would be used to passively ventilate our circulation corridors and reduce the overall operating energy requirements. Within this solar chimney is a featured mural where we envisioned local artists could leave their mark and contribute to the beauty and uniqueness of the neighborhood. It also features a mass timber structure to increase embodied carbon and make use of sustainable resources.
